Development Director

Madison-area Urban Ministry, an Interfaith non-profit social justice organization is seeking a full-time Development Director. Our agency works with individuals returning to the community from jail or prison, with children who have a parent who is incarcerated, individuals and families impacted by homelessness and health needs, and on social justice advocacy.

The Development Director will take the lead to develop and implement our fundraising efforts, including donor development and appeals, grant writing, and events. The Development Director will also work collaboratively with the Executive Director to oversee the communications for the organization, with a focus on social media networking.


The Development Director will report directly to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.

Primary Duties:

Work with the Executive Director and Board Finance Committee to create an annual development plan. Assist in the development of strategy and oversee implementation for successful delivery of the plan.

Lead and manage overall development efforts to secure an annual budget to support agency programs.

Develop a fundraising plan. Lead and train other staff on the skills to achieve fundraising and marketing goals.  Develop Board fundraising capacity.

Write grant proposals and follow-up reports to corporate, foundation and government funders.

Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential individual and organizational donors.  Seek and develop relationships with major donors.

Oversee the agency website and communications through effective use of social media.


Minimum of two years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, donor relations, gifts, and board development.

Demonstrated ability to personally solicit and secure donations from people and organizations.

Strong communication skills, including speaking, writing and interpersonal communications.

Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple demands.

Familiarity with the Madison philanthropic and business community desired.

Interest in social justice and multi-faith work.

Appointment Type/Salary:

This is a full-time position, salary range $50,000 - $60,000, medical, dental and life insurance, long-term disability insurance, paid vacation, sick and holidays.
