Job Description – Communications Assistant

 Title - Communications Assistant (12-15 hours per week – nonexempt)

Summary – The communications assistant of Temple Beth El supports the associate executive director in the management and execution of the marketing initiatives and branding for the Temple, including writing and design of printed and electronic materials.  The communications assistant will track all communication projects start to finish and follow up on publication deadlines, as well as collaborate with the communications and fund development committees to fulfill their objectives and will work under the direction of the Temple administration.


With nearly 600 member families, Temple Beth El has a vibrant program of religious, spiritual, educational, social, social action and support activities.  Temple Beth El is affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism, which represents the liberal tradition of Judaism. As a house of worship, a center of teaching and learning and a place of communal fellowship, the Temple’s progressive voice is heard and respected not only in Madison,but also throughout Wisconsin.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, collect, and edit, content to distribute to our various media channels
  • Track progress of all TBE publications, and internal communications
  • Manage social media posts
  • Coordinate and oversee production of bi-monthly printed newsletter -bulletin
  • Curate photographs/videos
  • Produce flyers, posters, calendars, and publicity materials
  • Submit calendar and other PR materials for publication to the Madison Jewish News
  • Ensure that TBE calendar is uploaded to the Jewish Federation of Madison’s website
  • Maintain electronic archive for printed and electronic materials
  • Provide communication support for committees and programs that require collateral materials including flyers, email blasts, and display ads
  • Participate fully in the shared work of Temple Beth El, community events, staff meetings/trainings, and other duties as assigned 

Required education and experience

  • Superior writing skills
  • Proficient layout/design skills
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Able to utilize IN DESIGN and/or other design and audio-visual software
  • Experience working well independently, collaborating, and taking direction
  • Strong attention to details
  • Proven ability to engage with and develop communications for a wide range of programs and audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, create effective systems/processes, juggle multiple tasks, and adhere to deadlines in a lively, fast-paced work environment

Preferred knowledge and skills

  • Experience in digital and print communications preferred
  • Proficiency with social media platforms, Constant Contact or similar email platform
  • Experience with fund development preferred
  • Experience with web content management systems
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations or associations
  • Familiarity with Jewish organizations a plus

Special Considerations

This is a 12-15 hour per week non-exempt position.  We expect that the communications assistant will be available for weekly staff meetings and other planning meetings and events when appropriate. All work is to be performed in-house.
